Why can water filtered with a Coldstream FTO+ filter sometimes taste like dust?
Share
It may happen, although rarely, that some users notice a slight taste of dust in the water filtered with Coldstream FTO+ filters, especially during the very first uses.
What causes this unusual taste?
According to Coldstream, this isolated phenomenon is linked to a specific stage of the manufacturing process: the passage through a sieve and the compaction of the activated carbon. If this phase is not perfectly homogeneous, it can result in the release of fine particles perceptible to the taste, such as a slight earthy or mineral flavor.
A process now improved
Good news: Coldstream has recently optimized this production step. Thanks to finer sieving and reinforced quality control, defects that could alter the taste have been largely eliminated. These adjustments guarantee always pure water, without aftertaste, while maintaining very high level filtration against PFAS, bacteria, pesticides and heavy metals.
What to do if this happens to you?
In the rare cases where this taste is present, here is our advice:
-
Carefully prime the filter by letting several liters flow before first use.
-
Rinse the inside of the filter with clean water.
-
Let the filter sit for 24 to 48 hours: the taste generally disappears quickly.
