Do Berkey Light® systems contain BPA?
In the past, Berkey Light systems ® were made of food-grade polycarbonate approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration. Some research suggests that polycarbonates are known to leach BPA (bisphenol-A) when exposed to high-strength industrial-grade alkaline detergents or when repeatedly exposed to temperatures above 192 degrees Fahrenheit (over 88 degrees Celsius); neither occurs when using the Berkey Light system ®  . New studies regarding possible leaching of BPA are underway. A lot of misinformation has also been circulating on the airwaves and on the Internet. The FDA said in April 2008 that it was not recommending that... Recognizing an authentic Black Berkey® filter vs. a copy
We draw your attention to the fact that counterfeit Berkey® products have been found on the market. Unscrupulous individuals or companies try to pass off their generic carbon block filters as authentic Berkey® products by putting them in boxes that they have tried to reproduce as authentic. We are investigating the source to take action against them. However, we need your continued vigilance and assistance in identifying anyone who may be selling counterfeit products.   The first generation of berkey holograms, now (obsolete). I have heard that algae can grow in the water when using the Berkey Light®
Algae may develop in the Berkey Light ® due to two factors. The first is that the Berkey systems ® remove any chemicals that would inhibit algae growth. The second is light. If the LED on the base stays on constantly, it can encourage algae growth. This situation can also occur if the Berkey system ® is placed next to or near a sunny window where it receives direct sunlight. This can be avoided by moving the system or not using LED lights as much. Another resolution that our customers have reported working very well is to simply place a pure silver coin, such as an... What is the Micron Rating of Black Berkey® Purification Elements
Regarding micron rating, NMCL does not use or publish a micron rating for Black Berkey® elements for the following reasons: There is a lot of confusion when it comes to nominal and absolute micron ratings. An absolute micron rating is one that indicates the maximum pore size expected in an item. The micron rating is the average pore size in the element. This means that if 90% of the pores are 0.02 microns and 10% are 2 microns, one could argue that the nominal micron rating is 0.2 microns, which would imply that... Do Berkey® systems remove volcanic ash from drinking water?
Volcanic eruptions are among the most breathtaking, yet terrifying and destructive, natural disasters on planet Earth. Lava can reach temperatures above 2,000°F and destroy everything in its path. While lava is usually contained about 100 miles from the eruption, volcanic smoke, gases and ash can darken the sky and travel hundreds or even thousands of miles. Volcanic ash is composed of tiny, jagged pieces of rock and glass and can contain deposits of minerals, heavy metals and various chemicals, some of which are corrosive and harmful and can contaminate soil, vegetation and...
