Health and environment: why it is urgent to rethink our water consumption
A judicial investigation aimed at Nestle Waters highlights rates record of microplastics in mineral waters Contrex and Hepar. The analyzes reveal 515 particles per liter for Contrex and 2096 particles per liter for Hépar – either up to 1.3 million times more than what is usually found in lakes, rivers or rivers.
♻️ Illegal dumping at the heart of the scandal
According to the French Biodiversity Office and Oclaesp, these microplastics come from historic plastic waste dumps located around the Vosges bottling sites. Near 474,000 m³ of waste – the equivalent of 126 Olympic swimming pools – would have polluted soil and groundwater.
⚠️ Health risks
Microplastics are now suspected of having harmful effects on human health : hormonal disruptions, chronic inflammation, and accumulation in certain organs. The magistrate in charge of the investigation speaks of concentrations “making all aquatic life impossible” and potentially dangerous to health.
🗓 An expected trial
The Nestlé Waters trial will be held from November 24 to 28. The company disputes any pollution and claims that its waters remain “perfectly safe to drink”.
