Features Detail
Composition of the pack 4 Phoenix + 4 Berkey PF-2™
Use of the pack Two sets of 2 Phoenix + 2 PF-2™, for two successive replacements, or 4 Phoenix + 4 PF-2™ installed simultaneously in a compatible fountain.
Water to filter Drinking tap water, previously treated
Phoenix: media and position CTC-60 activated carbon from coconut shells; elements installed in the upper tank
PF-2™: role and position Complementary reduction of fluorides, arsenic V and pre-oxidized arsenic III; elements suspended in the lower tank, under the Phoenix
Dimensions of a Phoenix Approximately 24.1 cm in height, including rod × 6.4 cm in diameter
Dimensions of a PF-2™ Approximately 15.2 cm length × 6.35 cm diameter
Compatibility Phoenix + PF-2™ association confirmed by NMCL for compatible Berkey® systems. Not suitable for the Go Berkey®. Check the space available and the number of elements admitted by your tank.
Phoenix: volume reference Approximately 20,800 L per pair (5,500 US gallons), depending on the quality of water
Phoenix: advice from the store Replacement every 12 months from commissioning, or earlier depending on the conditions of use
PF-2™: manufacturer replacement Approximately 3,785 L per pair or 1 year, whichever comes first reached ; capacity depending in particular on the composition of the water
Flow of the association Variable depending on the fountain, the number of filters, the water level and the condition of the media. PF-2™ may slow filtration.
Limited commercial warranties Phoenix: 1 year. PF-2™: 6 months. Manufacturer guarantees according to their conditions, distinct from replacement deadlines.

The liter marks apply to a pair of the media concerned. They do not describe a uniform pack capacity for all contaminants. Commercial guarantees do not replace applicable legal rights.

Activated carbon at the heart of filtration

Phoenix elements use a media based on CTC-60 activated carbon from coconut shells. Their microporous structure combines particle retention and adsorption of certain substances present in water.

They are designed to reduce chlorine and improve the taste and odor of drinking tap water. They operate by gravity, without electricity.

The PF-2™ complement

PF-2™ complements the Phoenix to reduce fluorides, arsenic V and pre-oxidized arsenic III. They contain activated alumina media in a BPA-free #5 polypropylene shell.

Install a PF-2™ under each Phoenix in use. The PF-2™ is a complement: it does not replace the main filter.

The capacity and efficiency depend in particular on the pH and the concentration of the substances present. Both types of filters therefore have their own replacement deadline.

Understanding the flow rate

A rapid flow rate alone is not enough to conclude that there is a defect. The flow rate depends on the fountain model, the number of elements in service, their priming and the water level.

The flow rate is higher when the upper tank is full, then decreases as it empties. Check that the filters and caps are correctly mounted and sealed.

With PF-2™, the flow rate may decrease. The values announced for Phoenix alone do not represent the guaranteed flow rate of this association.

The dye verifies the assembly

The test at red food coloring is used to check the assembly and identify leaks, particularly around joints, fixings or plugs.

This is not a test of effectiveness on contaminants. Clear water during the test does not alone validate all filtration performance or any flow rate observed.

Remove the PF-2™s before testing and reinstall them after checking and flushing the system. Use the dye and dosage indicated in the instructions. If a red or pink tint persists after checking the assembly, contact our customer service.

Two deadlines to follow

Elements in service When to replace them?
Phoenix Shop advice: 12 months after commissioning. Manufacturer mark in volume: approximately 20,800 L per pair; replacement sometimes required sooner.
PF-2™ Manufacturer: Approximately 3,785 L per pair or 1 year, whichever comes first. Heavier water may shorten this capacity.

This pack of four Phoenix and four PF-2™ does not mean twice as long life when all filters are installed together. If you use two Phoenix and two PF-2™ at the same time, note the date each successive set was put into service.

Tests and certifications: precise benchmarks

NSF records consulted mention the Big Berkey®, Royal Berkey® and Travel Berkey® systems equipped with Phoenix elements PGF9-2 :

  • NSF/ANSI 42: reduction of chlorine, taste and odor.
  • NSF/ANSI/CAN 372: requirements for lead content of materials. This reference does not certify the reduction of lead present in water.

This scope does not automatically extend to all compatible fountains or PF-2™. The NSF 372 register mentions a preliminary rinsing procedure of 15 to 20 liters.

The manufacturer also publishes independent tests concerning in particular certain PFAS, metals, pesticides and drug residues. Their results are assessed contaminant by contaminant, under the conditions of the reports available below.

Prepare and install the two stages

  • Prime Phoenix and PF-2™ separately with cold water following their instructions. The PF-2™ must be purged in both directions before installation.
  • Mount the Phoenix and check their tightness with red dye, without any PF-2™ installed. Then flush the system.
  • Install the PF-2™ under the Phoenix: the French PF-2™ instructions indicate not to exceed 8 turns of screwing. Overtightening may damage the internal screen.
  • After installing the PF-2™, discard the first filtered water as indicated in their instructions. If dust persists, resume purging.
  • Follow the maintenance and replacement of each media separately. Do not clean the Phoenix carbon with soap or detergent and protect the wet elements from freezing.

Contents of the pack

  • 4 Phoenix Gravity New Millennium Edition™ elements
  • 4 Berkey PF-2™ elements
  • Phoenix fixing accessories, PrimeEasy™ primer and instructions supplied with the Phoenix boxes

Origin of the elements: Phoenix Gravity New Millennium Edition™ manufactured and assembled in India; Berkey PF-2™ manufactured and assembled in the United States.

Instructions, advice and documentation

PF-2™ performance depends in particular on the pH and composition of water; their instructions indicate a pH range of 5 to 7 for maximum effectiveness. Follow the instructions for both elements and use suitable drinking water; the Phoenix are not suitable for salt water or water from a salt softener.
