Activated carbon at the heart of filtration
Phoenix elements use a media based on CTC-60 activated carbon from coconut shells. Their microporous structure combines particle retention and adsorption of certain substances present in water.
They are designed to reduce chlorine and improve the taste and odor of drinking tap water. They operate by gravity, without electricity.
Understanding the flow
A rapid flow rate alone is not enough to conclude that there is a fault. The flow depends on the fountain model, the number of elements in service, their priming and the water level.
The flow rate is highest when the upper tank is full, then decreases as it empties. Check that the filters and caps are correctly fitted and sealed.
The correct replacement mark
Our store recommends replacing Phoenix filters every 12 months from their commissioning. Earlier replacement may be necessary depending on the water filtered and the conditions of use.
The manufacturer also indicates a mark of 5,500 US gallons, or approximately 20,800 liters per pair. This announced volume and our replacement advice over time are two distinct benchmarks.
With this set of four, you can use two pairs successively, or four elements together if your fountain allows it. Four filters used simultaneously remain subject to the same replacement advice at 12 months. For a pair kept in reserve, the period begins when it is first used.
The dye checks the assembly
The test with red food coloring is used to check the assembly and identify leaks, particularly around joints, fixings or caps.
This is not a test of effectiveness on contaminants. Clear water during the test does not in itself validate all the filtration performances nor any observed flow rate.
Remove the PF-2™ before the test if your fountain is equipped with one. Use the dye and dosage indicated in the instructions. If a red or pink tint persists after checking the assembly, contact our customer service.
Some flow benchmarks depending on your fountain
| Configuration, without PF-2™ | Advertised maximum flow rate |
|---|---|
| Big Berkey® with 2 Phoenix | Up to 13.3 L/h |
| Royal Berkey® with 2 Phoenix | Up to 15.1 L/h |
| Big or Royal Berkey® with 4 Phoenix | Up to 26.5 L/h |
Manufacturer values calculated with the upper tank full; the flow rate decreases with the water level. Consult the data sheet for your model for its exact configuration: Big Berkey® or Royal Berkey®.
Tests and certifications: precise benchmarks
The NSF registers consulted mention the systems Big Berkey®, Royal Berkey® and Travel Berkey® equipped with Phoenix PGF9-2 elements :
- NSF/ANSI 42: reduction of chlorine, taste and odor.
- NSF/ANSI/CAN 372: requirements for lead content in materials. This reference does not certify the reduction of lead present in water.
This scope does not automatically extend to all compatible fountains or PF-2™. The NSF 372 register mentions a preliminary rinsing procedure of 15 to 20 liters.
The manufacturer also publishes independent tests concerning in particular certain PFAS, metals, pesticides and drug residues. Their results are assessed contaminant by contaminant, under the conditions of the reports available below.
Careful commissioning
- Prime each Phoenix with cold water with the PrimeEasy™ primer or one of the methods provided for in the instructions, until the media is saturated and the flow clear.
- Install the elements in the upper tank : sealing washer inside the tank and wing nut under the tank. Tighten by hand, without forcing, and close the unused locations.
- Check the assembly with red dye following the instructions, without PF-2™ installed.
- Maintain the media without soap or detergent: gentle brushing under cold water if the flow slows, then repriming. Protect the wet filters from freezing.
Contents of the set
The set contains 4 Phoenix elements, i.e. two pairs.
A standard box of two elements contains:
- 2 Phoenix elements with 2 sealing washers and 2 wing nuts
- 1 universal primer PrimeEasy™
- 2 bottles of red food coloring and 1 instructions
Origin: Phoenix Gravity New Millennium Edition™ elements manufactured and assembled in India.
