Approximate dimensions and weights converted from manufacturer's values. The number of people is a benchmark to adapt to your consumption. Remove the filters and the tap before fitting the tanks and follow the instructions for their storage. The total weight of this offer with its two PF-2™ is not published by the manufacturer; the mark above is for the Royal standard.
Filtered water at your fingertips
The system works with the weight of the water: water poured into the upper tank passes through the Black Berkey® elements, then the lower tank retains the filtered water for service. You keep control of the filling, without an electrical connection.
With its reserve of 12.3 liters, the Royal Berkey® is suitable for regular use at home. Install it on a stable surface, adapted to the weight of the full system, with practical access to the cover and the tap.
UNDERSTANDING FILTRATION
Scalable flow rate according to your configuration
| Configuration without PF-2™ |
Maximum manufacturer flow rate |
| 2 Black Berkey® supplied |
Up to 15.1 L/h
|
| 4 Black Berkey® total |
Up to 26.5 L/h
|
Maximum configuration requires 2 Black Berkey® filters additional, sold separately.
These maximums are measured with the upper tank full. The flow rate decreases as the water level drops and also depends on priming and maintenance.
These values relate to the Royal without PF-2™. They do not constitute a promise of flow rate for the two stages of this pack. The PF-2™ adds resistance to flow, especially when submerged in the lower tank.
VOLUME AND MAINTENANCE
The right benchmark for replacing your filters
The manufacturer recommends replacing the Black Berkey® pair after approximately 22,700 liters of filtered water, or 6 000 US gallons for both elements.
Filters may require replacement sooner depending on water quality. This volume does not correspond to a fixed duration in years. Note your consumption and maintain the elements during their period of use.
The reference is specific to Black Berkey® BB9-2. It should not be applied to the Phoenix or the PF-2™.
For the PF-2™ pair: approximately 3,785 L or one year, whichever comes first. Follow the replacement of both types of filters separately.
Understanding Black Berkey® performance
Black Berkey® elements use a proprietary blend of filter media. The manufacturer publishes third-party laboratory tests including chlorine, certain metals, pesticides, volatile organic compounds and perfluorinated compounds.
Results should be read substance by substance and under the test conditions. Testing following an NSF/ANSI protocol does not, in itself, mean that the product has NSF certification.

- Two Black Berkey® BB9-2 elements.
- Two Berkey PF-2™ post-filters.
- A stainless steel cover, with knob and screw.

FLUORIDES AND ARSENIC
Two PF-2™ to complement the Black Berkey®
The included pair of PF-2™ containsactivated alumina media in a BPA-free #5 polypropylene shell. It complements Black Berkey® for the reduction of fluorides, arsenic V and pre-oxidized arsenic III.
Prime the PF-2™ with cold water in both directions. Install a PF-2™ under each Black Berkey® in service, without exceeding eight screw turns and without forcing. After installation, throw away the first filtered water in accordance with the instructions.
Their capacity depends in particular on the composition and pH of the water. The manufacturer indicates an optimal range of pH 5 to 7. PF-2™ have their own replacement deadline: approximately 3,785 L per pair or one year, at the first term reached.
If you install four Black Berkey®, add two PF-2™ to maintain one post-filter per main element. The two additional PF-2™ are sold separately.
FIRST USE
Prepare your fountain
-
Clean the tanks and the faucet, then prime the Black Berkey® with cold water according to the instructions.
- Install the elements in the upper tank with their seals. Tighten the nuts by hand, without using force, and close all unused holes.
- Perform the assembly check, then discard the first filtered water according to the instructions. Repeat rinsing if particles persist.
- For subsequent fillings, take into account the water already present in the lower tank to avoid overflow.
DAILY
Simple steps for maintenance
The manufacturer recommends regular maintenance of the lower tank and the tap, approximately every 30 days as needed. Remove the elements before cleaning the tanks.
If the flow rate decreases, the Black Berkey® can be surface cleaned under water then primed again according to the instructions. Do not use soap or detergent on the filter elements. Protect wet filters from freezing.
CHECK MOUNTING POINTS
Dye checks assembly
Red food coloring test checks assembly and internal leaks, especially around gaskets, filters and caps. It does not alone measure the filtration efficiency on all contaminants.
Remove the PF-2™ before this test if they are installed. Use the coloring and dosage in the instructions. If a red or pink tint persists after checking the assembly, contact our customer service.
TIPS FOR USE
Choose the water to be filtered
For daily use, use cold or room temperature drinking water. The system is not for use with salt water, hot water or water from a salt softener.
Water of unknown origin may present particular risks. The advertised capacities do not guarantee the potability of any raw water or the removal of all pathogens.
